Breakfast: Look Closer, It’s Not Soda (the Fizzy Lizzy Post)

I often start the day with a serving of fruit juice, but this is a first: it tastes like I’m drinking a soda for breakfast.

photoAh, but look again: No sugar added. Just fruit juice, water and bubbles. That’s one of two secrets of Fizzy Lizzy‘s awesome fruit spritzers, the second being that the percentage of juice varies between 35% (Northern Lights Cranberry) and 70% (Lone Star Grapefruit), which means you’re not getting 100% of the calories of 100% juice, and still having a refreshing juice beverage.

To which my mother, if we were engaged in a dialogue standing in a kitchen somewhere, would point out: Nor are you getting 100% of the juice’s nutrients.

And I’d respond: Yeah, but 70% juice in a 12 oz. serving size — that’s roughly the same amount of juice as an 8 oz. glass of 100% juice. Right?

Welcome to my childhood. This is exactly the sort of nerdy nutritional debates we had all the time growing up. Loved it.

Breakfast: Honest Tea, Just “a Tad Sweet”

Gonna make this one short and just “a tad sweet.” If you identify with any or all of the following statements:

photoa.) ever drink tea, hot or iced
b.) prefer diet (i.e. “no cal” or “low cal”) drinks
c.) think most bottled beverages that aren’t diet taste too syrup-y sweet
d.) have a personal vendetta with high-fructose corn syrup
e.) get bored with drinking H2O all the time
f.) have a soft spot for companies with sustainable initiatives

You will like Honest Tea. Lightly-sweetened iced tea (“a tad sweet” is one of their mottos), only 35 calories per bottle, no high fructose corn syrup in sight, started by a couple of business school geeks with a soft spot for sustainability, Honest Tea’s a good egg.

TIP: I love that they posted their original business plan on their website; check the “1998″ segment of the “Honest Tea” link above.

Breakfast: Spicy & Bold, It’s How I Like My …

photo-5… hot cocoa. You were wondering where I was going with that one, weren’t you?

This cinnamon-y number is from Caribou Coffee, a Minneapolis-based company that I will forever associate with the MSP airport as I’ve never seen one elsewhere, not even driving around the state (although I’m sure they exist).

The verdict is still out on what I really think about it, but first impression is mixed. Tastes like one of those cinnamon after dinner mints has been crushed and mixed into my hot chocolate, and I’m not sure I like those mints to begin with. I think it could be improved with some Bailey’s or Kahlua and had as an after-dinner treat. Hmm …

Breakfast: Friday, May 1, 2009

photo110 calorie XXX (triple antioxidants) VitaminWater doth a breakfast not make.

Working from home today, which you think would give me more, not less, options, but fridge is barren. Just about noon though which means I’ll soon be foraging for lunch in a new neighborhood!

I also foresee a meander through Essex Street Market in my near future… things are looking up.

COST: $2
